Should you perform an operation when the electricity to the theaters has failed and you are running on generator power?
May 31st, 2010
This scenario happened to me today. I was halfway through my morning operating session having completed two breast enlargements when the electricity to the hospital and the local region failed at 10:30 am.
My next case was a tummy tuck and the dilemma was should I start the surgery running on back up means generated power.
Polyurethane Implants – What’s all the fuss about?
May 30th, 2010Recently, there has been a lot of interest in the use of polyurethane implants. This are silicone implants coated with a polyurethane foam.
This implants are now used much more than previously, and the principle reason for this is they have a very low capsular contraction rate.
Are dermal fillers really dermal fillers?
May 29th, 2010
to restore volume to the dermis, they are used to restore volume to the tissue beneath the dermis.
No. This is a misconception of dermal fillers are not used to treat the dermis. The dermis in the face is the lowest part of the skin. The upper layer of the skin is called the epidermis and the deeper layer the dermis.
In the face this skin measures approximately 3-4 mm in depth depending on the area being slightly lowest and being thinner in the area such as the lower eyelid and thicker in areas such as the cheeks.
Dermal fillers are actually used to treat the area below the dermis. The thinner fillers such as restylane touch are used most efficiently in the layer beneath the dermis and thicker fillers such as perlane and juvederm 3 for deeper injections beneath the dermis.
If dermal fillers are actively placed within the dermis it is possible to get a very unnatural long lasting line which is visible from a distance.
It is therefore important for all doctors and other practitioners performing this treatment to understand that dermal fillers are not used to restore volume to the dermis, they are used to restore volume to the tissue beneath the dermis.
Should plastic surgical procedures be carried out in a laminar flow theatre?
May 28th, 2010In my opinion, yes it is the first thing I make sure is turned on in the operating theatre every morning before my operating list. Lamina air flow theatres are the latest type of theatre in which clean air is circulated in the theatre. The clean air is brought down through a hood in the ceiling and ejected through gaps in the doors and ventilation holes in the walls of the theatre. The air in the theatre is changed approximately every 30 seconds this significantly reduces the risk of any bacterial contamination of the wound. Breast Enlargement Surgery – Under the Muscle or Over
May 27th, 2010
I find the decision as to whether to place implants above or below the muscle a difficult one and each surgeon that I talked to has a different percentage of patients in which they place the implant under or over the muscle.
I never use a total sub-muscular coverage and neither do any of the surgeons I know. Total sub-muscular coverage involves coverage of the implant by serratus-anterior in the lower portion of the breast and pectoralis in the upper portion. Read the rest of this entry »
A Testimonial from Janice
May 18th, 2010Hi Debbie
Reading through the March news letter, I noticed you were looking for people to report back on their experiences of surgery with Aurora.
I met Mr Richards just before Christmas to discuss the possibility of breast surgery – something I’d been considering for years, but had been too scared to pursue. Mr Richards and his team were great – from the first meeting right through to aftercare. They treated me kindly and with respect and made everything as pleasant and lighthearted as possible – even when Mr Richards was running a little late, the ladies at the Paddocks, Princes Risborough, chatted to me and tried some new mineral cosmetics on me! It all helped to calm my nerves and added so much to the experience.
