 Most plastic surgery patients have real problems and so have genuine concerns which they would like treated. Once this area is  addressed they often experience improved self-confidence and feel better in themselves.

Issues patients typically come to discuss with me include;

1. Breast Asymmetry. Many women in their early twenties develop one breast significantly larger than the other. This causes significant difficulties with wearing clothing and with relationships at a very sensitive time for the patients.
2. Inverted Nipples. Although this sounds like a relatively minor concern, it does affect approximately 10% of women in the United Kingdom and can cause significant embarrassment. Many people do not realize that nipple inversion can be corrected with a relatively minor procedure.

Some people are born with one or both of their nipples inverted instead of the normal protruding appearance. This condition is actually quite common, affecting almost 10% of the population. Unfortunately, many people do not realize that this condition can be corrected quite simply under local anesthetic. This is caused by the shortening of the ducts which come from the glandular tissue within the breast to emerge on the nipple. This condition can cause significant embarrassment as some people find it difficult to wear some clothes particularly thin tops or swimwear as the inversion can be quite visible.

The surgical operation for inverted nipple correction is surprisingly quick, performed under local anesthetic and only takes approximately 15 minutes per side. The only pain the patient will experience with the operation is the mild discomfort associated with the injection of the anesthetic which only lasts for about 10 seconds, after which, the operation is painless.

The operation is quite simple, a small incision is made in the lower outer border of the nipple and depending on the grade of the inversion the ducts leading to the nipple are then either gently stretched or divided. If the ducts are stretched, they will remain intact and breast feeding will usually be possible following the operation. Once the nipple is released, it is held in the normal position with an absorbable stitch that is placed internally and will be naturally melted by the body. Once the nipples are corrected, they are unlikely to go back being inverted.

I am 14 years of age and have Grade 3 nipples, and I always have.   Recently though, I have noticed my nipples have become slightly more visible.  

They never protrude like normal nipples but I can see them, and occasionly they will protude enough to look like flat nipples instead of inverted nipples, but eventually retreat. 

 
This never used to happen when I was younger.. Does this mean over time my nipples may naturally protrude without surgery?

 As you know inverted nipples are very common and affect approximately 10% or people.

 It is good that they are becoming less inverted with time.  This trend may well continue and you are right that you may not need surgery.

 It might be worth trying the nipplette suction device if you have not done so before.  This stretches the ducts gently and helps the nipple remain everted for longer periods.
