If you have been researching Aurora Clinics UK for your cosmetic surgery procedure, chances are that you found lots of videos, articles and podcasts by Mr. Adrian Richards.

Adrian Richards (Cosmetic and Plastic Surgeon)

Mr. Richards is Aurora’s Clinical Director and a fantastic surgeon – he was voted ‘Home Counties Leading Plastic Surgeon’ by The Daily Mail and ‘Leading Breast Surgeon UK’ by The Independent on Sunday. But that’s not the only reason that Mr. Richards appears all over the Internet – he is a pioneer of digital media, believing that cosmetic surgery information should be made freely available to all those who want it through videos, podcasts, photos and blogs.

Because of this, Mr. Richards is our surgeon who gets the most limelight.

But did you know that Aurora Clinics actually have a number of top-quality Plastic and Cosmetic surgeons, all specialising in different procedures and of an equally high standard (just maybe a little more camera-shy!)

Mr. Prashant Govilkar

Holding an NHS post with Stoke Mandeville Hospital Centre of Excellence, Mr. Govilkar also works regularly as an Aurora Clinics Buckinghamshire partner surgeon. He provides a whole range of treatments from breast to face surgery but is a post bariatric surgery specialist, expert at treatments like the body lift for after patients have lost a lot of weight. Mr. Prashant Govilkar is very actively involved in training others, presenting and authoring his own papers. His patients really appreciate his calm manner and sympathetic listening skills.

Mr. Miles Berry

The perfect Aurora Clinics choice if you need a top-quality surgeon based in London. Consulting from our Harley Street clinic, Mr. Berry trained extensively in breast reconstruction after breast cancer as his speciality. Nowadays with Aurora Clinics, however, he is also an expert in more general breast surgery procedures and male breast reduction (gynecomastia surgery) too. Mr Berry has a great sense of humour and is very popular with all his patients.

Mr. Mark Scott

Mr. Scott comes highly recommended by the many patients he has treated over the years. Impressively, he was one of the UK’s youngest ever consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, when he was appointed to Stoke Mandeville NHS Trust back in 1996. Mr Scott’s background is also in Plastic and Reconstructive surgery and he is a real expert in breast surgery procedures as well as face lifts and rhinoplasty (nose reshaping) amongst other treatments. He can be seen for consultation with Aurora at The Paddocks Clinic in Princes Risborough.

Aurora Clinics have an extensive team of Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery Specialists

We do have a number of other expert Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeons, not to mention our expert team of Aesthetic Practitioners who offer our Non-Surgical treatments. Aurora Clinics are very proud of our Team and selective about who we work with: by only partnering with Board-accredited, highly experienced and qualified surgeons we are able to offer you the very best surgery experience and results.

To arrange a consultation with any of our surgeons, please call us on 0800 328 5743 and we will be delighted to advise on the most suitable surgeon for you. All of the surgeons mentioned in this article are experts in performing PIP implant removal and replacement surgery for Aurora Clinics, please contact us for details.

Mr Richards with Alison Thornberry of Surgery Shield

Aurora Clinics are now working in partnership with Surgery Shield (Sure Insurance Services Ltd) team and are very happy to confirm that we have been approved as a Surgery Shield centre.

There are many benefits for you of having your cosmetic surgery performed by a Surgeon from a Surgery Shield approved clinic:

You can be sure that your Aurora Surgeon is of the very best standard possible: the rigorous Surgery Shield insurance policy is only available to surgeons with the highest credentials. They must be members of accredited professional associations of plastic surgeons, able to demonstrate a record of low complication rates and either on the UK GMC specialist register or hold International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons full membership.

You will soon be able to view your Surgeon’s complication rate and Surgery Shield listing on a public directory. Surgery Shield Surgeons are monitored on an ongoing basis for their rate of complications: a high complication rate would result in them being refused cover until they underwent appropriate re-training. As such, choosing to have surgery with a Surgery Shield Surgeon at a Surgery Shield Approved centre means that you can feel confident that your surgeon ranks amongst those with the lowest complication rates.

Surgery Shield Surgeons are chosen because they actively acknowledge the risks and complications involved with any form of surgery but are dedicated to making you aware of these implications and skilled in reducing the risks whilst providing a high-quality service.

You can rest assured that, although your Surgeon is top-class, Surgery Shield can provide the required insurance for eligible surgeons to cover any unlikely complications and remedial surgery.

At Aurora Clinics, we are delighted to have numerous members of our expert dedicated Team who meet the stringent Surgery Shield assessment criteria: call us on 0800 328 5743 to book your consultation today for a wide range of procedures with:
• Mr Adrian Richards
• Mr Mike Tyler
• Mr. Nitin Vaingankar
• Mr Mark Scott
• Mr Miles Berry
• Mr Davood Fallahdar
• Mr Prashant Govilkar

And you can feel safe in the knowledge that you will be having your surgery done by one of the very best cosmetic surgeons in the UK!

Mole Removal at Aurora: Look Great & Stay Skin Cancer Safe

Private Healthcare UK recently reported a surge in men and women requesting mole removal procedures. This is certainly true for Aurora Clinics. Now we are into April, it is time to start being even more “skin-savvy” and be aware of the effect the sunnier weather could have on your body. Whilst mole removal procedures are often performed for aesthetic reasons – if a mole looks unsightly or is raised and catches on clothing – Aurora also offers a Histology Report service to mole removal patients. This involves sending your mole specimen sample to the Laboratory to test for skin cancer or other abnormal cells. By having your mole removed at Aurora, therefore, you not only benefit from great minimal-scarring results by our expert surgeons and same-day procedures under local anaesthetic with minimal waiting lists: you also have the peace of mind of knowing that you can catch any skin cancer if it is present, giving yourself the very best chance to treat it.

For a FREE consultation with a Plastic Surgeon or Dermatologist to advise on the most suitable treatment for your moles, call us on 01844 214 362 or use our online contact form.

Semi Permanent Make-Up Comes to Aurora
If you are considering enhancing the natural beauty of your facial features, Aurora has another non-surgical option: semi permanent make-up. We are delighted to welcome Pauline Kneller to Aurora Clinics. With over eight years of experience working alongside some top make-up technicians, Pauline offers a great range of treatments:

Eyeliner

Eyebrows

Lip Body (Blush or Full Colour)

Lip Liner

Beauty spots and freckles

She is also skilled in medical Micropigmentation to disguise and improve scarring, burns, stretch marks and reconstruct areolas or nipples following trauma or Breast Cancer (look out for our Blog all about Medical Tattooing, coming soon).

Semi permanent make-up has lots of advantages: it is long-lasting (fading naturally over approximately 18 months); comes in a huge range of colours; is great for people with a hectic lifestyle who do not have time to be applying make-up / those who are allergic to certain cosmetics; it can be used to correct asymmetrical features and to reconstruct and camouflage. Pauline’s focus is on creating a very natural look which is not “drawn on” but tattooed with a needle. She assures us, however, that it is not as uncomfortable as regular tattooing and you can expect to be completely healed and looking gorgeous within 5-7 days.

To book an appointment with Pauline Kneller at Aurora Clinics, call us on 01844 214 362.

Tribal Ear Piercings? We can get you out of a Hole.
Adrian Richards at Aurora Clinics has seen increasing numbers of patients wanting to reconstruct holes left in their earlobes by Tribal ear piercings.

The process of dilating holes in the earlobes as wide as possible to insert Flesh Tunnels and Plugs has become fashionable amongst some social circles, particularly older teens and University students. As with many fashions linked to a particular time and social group, the owners of these ear piercings often grow to regret having them, feeling that they no longer fit their image years later. One recent Aurora patient told how his Tribal piercings put employers off when attending job interviews and he felt the Flesh Tunnels were a link back to a period of his life he had left behind.

Luckily, Aurora’s Mr Adrian Richards is an expert at such ear corrections. At the Whitethorn Clinic in Buckinghamshire, Mr Richards can remove the hole and reconstruct the earlobe, leaving only minimal scarring which will fade over time. A video of this procedure can be seen on our website. The cost for the procedure is from £800-£1800, depending upon the dilation of the piercing and whether you have both ears or only one stretched. This price reflects the fact that the procedure is quite a complex reconstruction, but one which allows patients to move on with their lives and leave their pasts – and their piercings! – behind.

For more information on any form of Ear Correction, or a FREE consultation at Aurora Clinics, please call one of our friendly patient coordinators on 01844 214 362.

Despite the increasing media attention highlighting potential risks of cosmetic surgery and the dangers when in the hands of an inferior surgeon, women refuse to heed the warning. Even after tragedies like the highly publicized recent death of Claudia Adeseye Aderotimi. This is pure idiocy where, as Liberate (the UK’s largest network of BAAPS and/or BAPRAS accredited cosmetic surgeons) marvel, women are still willing to put ‘price above safety’.

A top surgeon’s time costs money – those are hours that they could be operating instead. But Liberate surgeons know that giving this time is a vital part of the Cosmetic Surgery process, and (for patients) the extra expense of going to a registered and respected surgeon is a long-term investment for their future wellbeing. Getting to know the experience and qualifications of your surgeon is part of the education process about the potential risks and dangers of cosmetic surgery, which allows patients to make a fully informed decision. ‘Without the tools needed to make responsible choices’, Liberate warn, ‘cosmetic surgery can end up costing people financially, physically and psychologically’.

More attention is typically paid to the first two; the financial and physical dangers of ill-informed cosmetic surgery. The media has this well covered with regular horror stories: going abroad to a “surgeon” you know little about can result in expensive insurance or corrective surgery back home, scarring and poor results or – in worst case scenarios – death like poor Ms Aderotimi. But the psychological implications are just as important.

Do this huge proportion of cosmetic surgery patients not care that they never even meet the person to whom they are, essentially, handing over their lives? Or are many Cosmetic Surgery companies failing their patients greatly when it comes to Customer Service and support?

The Liberate press release suggests that most women do care very much, tellingly using the wording that 74% of women ‘felt it was important to know and see their surgeon throughout the course of treatment’. It is this knowing aspect that is so important. A Patient Coordinator can give you a complete Biography and breakdown of your surgeon’s CV and credentials (and who is to say this is any less true than coming directly from the surgeon themselves). You can ‘see’ your surgeon on countless Documentaries, Youtube clips, in magazine articles and even hurrying past in fleeting glimpses when you visit his team to make a booking. But there is simply no substitute for quality time: a 1-1 meeting with your surgeon where you can ask all the questions you want, only he can answer and you can make up your mind if you really believe everything he’s telling you, buy into his beliefs and ways of working and, most importantly, feel confident that you can trust him to do a good job. Because that trust is something more than just qualifications and a resume: it is a gut-instinct based upon your reaction to the surgeon as a person that no third party reassurance or online profile can instil in you.

Liberate have been formed with a focus on ‘reassurance’. Of course the aim is ‘to give you access to the highest quality cosmetic surgery’, but perhaps equally importantly, a Liberate cosmetic surgeon ‘will be with you every step of the way – from your first consultation through to the finished result. And it doesn’t stop there – your consultant will be there for you after your procedure for as long as you need them’. This is 100% the viewpoint that we endorse (and always have done!) at Aurora clinics. We try to make information open and available to everybody through as broad a range of medias as possible – Youtube, our websites, Facebook, podcasts, free information CDs and information fact sheets – but we are very aware that none of this provides the same Peace of Mind as a face-to-face consultation with your surgeon. That is why Aurora offer free consultations with our friendly and approachable surgeons. You can take the time you need to ask any questions you may have, and rest assured that we are equally dedicated to your aftercare consultations following surgery.

At Aurora, you will never become one of the “unseen” 30%.

When you call us on 01844 214 362 to book your free consultation… your journey with us is only just beginning!

Question :

Hello, I am 12 years old and I would like to get a Breast Reduction.

I am 5ft and size 32c. I don’t suffer from any health problems due to their size, so I understand that i don’t really need it: i only want it because I feel my breasts are too big and I want to be able to exercise and look good in clothes I wear. What are the risks that i will be taking if I had a Breast Reduction?

Thank you for your advice.

Answer :

Thank you for your enquiry.

Unfortunately we do not usually perform Breast Reduction surgery on people who are 12. This is because your bust has not fully developed. Most Plastic Surgeons prefer to wait for you to be 18 before thinking about possible surgery.

In some cases Breast Reduction surgery can be performed earlier- this is normally when your bust develops very quickly to a G or H cup which causes back and neck ache as well as difficulty wearing clothes.

In terms of risks and side effects of Breast Reduction surgery, although Breast Reduction procedures are normally safe, any Surgical procedure carries an element of risk which is why it must be thought through very carefully and discussed at length with your Surgeon. By researching and going to a good, BAAPS-registered Surgeon and equally competent anaesthetist you significantly decrease these risks. You should expect to need 1-2 weeks off work to recover, and approximately 6-8 weeks to return to your maximum normal daily activities. The slight possibility of not being able to breastfeed after breast reduction (though this is not always the case), decreased sensitivity in the nipples and extent of scarring should also be discussed thoroughly with your surgeon and carefully weighed up. Aurora Clinics offer FREE consultations with our surgeons to discuss your options and talk about the Pros and Cons of surgery in more detail.

Please feel free to contact us on 01844 214 362 if you feel we can be of any more help.

With Best Wishes,
The Aurora Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery Team.

There are a number of organisations which plastic surgeons and cosmetic doctors can be affiliated to.

As a basis, all doctors & plastic surgeons should be registered by the General Medical Council (GMC).

This organisation is mandatory to belong to for all registered doctors and you can check their registration at http://www.gmc-uk.org/.

For plastic surgeons, most will be registered with BAPRAS (The British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons) which regulates general plastic surgery including burn surgery, skin cancer & breast reconstruction as well as hand operations.

The organisation which regulates cosmetic surgery is called BAAPS (The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons) and all plastic surgeons who register with this organisation have to regularly audit their results and publish their figures to the organisation for validation.

For cosmetic doctors, the main organisation is the BACD (British Association of Cosmetic Doctors). This organisation has an excellent website and again all members are validated and assessed.

I think it is worthwhile asking your surgeons which organisation they are affiliated to as generally it is the mark of a recognised surgeon/ doctor to belong to one or more of these organisations.

With modern anesthetics and surgical techniques, recovery is now much quicker following breast enlargement surgery.

Generally, I do advise people in manual work to take a week off work and then they find they can return to normal activities.

During the week after surgery most people do have some discomfort in their chest which they liken to a swelling tight sensation for 3-4 days.

This occurs around a similar time to the swelling in the breast area which causes some of the discomfort.

After a week, the tenderness normally subsides and most people are able to get back to normal activities but if you do manual tasks such as raising your arms high and lifting it may be sensible to take up to 2 weeks off work before returning to full activities.

Generally, breast surgery is not this painful as many people think. As of the 3 main procedures breast uplift and breast reduction, breast enlargement tends to be the most uncomfortable. This is because the tissues are stretched and most people have a feeling of tightness in the chest following surgery.

In the 8 hours following surgery the local anesthetic used will reduce the pain and you shouldn’t feel a very much discomfort at all.

Following this there will be some of discomfort which most people liken to a stretching type feeling. If you have had an implant placed under the muscle there is slightly more pain in most cases but this is bearable.

Generally, the pain following breast surgery is less than most people expect and I do advice people to stop work for one week following surgery but they’re normally fine to go back to work after this time. Balanced modern anesthesia, more sophisticated surgery may aid a quicker recovery following breast surgery.

Following tummy tuck surgery the circular incision around the tummy button that your surgeon has created does tend to constrict slightly with time.

This can result in your tummy button becoming smaller and slightly tighter.

If this does occur I generally ask my patients to massage their tummy button gently on a twice daily basis.

They do this by inserting the tip of their index finger into their tummy button with some massage cream and rotating it to stretch the side and try to relax the circular constriction around the tummy button.

If the tummy button continues to constrict it is possible to perform other procedures and I recently read an article from Brazil in which surgeons recommend that you place a malleable ear bud in your tummy button when you’re asleep. This has the advantage of gently stretching the circular constriction during your sleeping hours so that it will not constrict during this time.

I have used this technique on some patients with good results but always council them to look carefully in the morning while they’re having their shower to make sure the ear plug is removed.
