What Is Liposuction
Hello. My name is Adrian Richards. I’m the Surgical Director of Aurora Clinics based here in the United Kingdom. We’re producing a series of information type videos on different procedures, and this is the first in our series of videos on liposuction. I’m going to be doing other videos and discussing the pros and cons of the different types, which areas are suitable for treatment, and things that can go wrong. It’s always important to remember that.
The first thing is, what is liposuction? The answer to that it is basically a technique where fatty tissue is removed by suction. It was really first introduced back in the ’70s, ’80s in France. It’s a relatively simple idea isn’t it really, but it was really the French that started the technique. In those days, we used what was called “dry liposuction,” which is essentially that no fluid was put in. Large cannulas, large ball, wide suction cannulas were used. There were no fluids injected first to dissolve the fat or reduce the bleeding. This dry liposuction, dry because no fluid was used, initially it worked, but since then we’ve come a long way forward with techniques which minimise bruising and swelling. These techniques are called “wet liposuction” because in the wet techniques these fluids are used, as I said, to dissolve the fatty tissue, help it be removed, reduce swelling and bruising.
In summary, liposuction is just really a technique used predominantly on the neck, jowls, male chest area. In fact, the female chest area, you can use liposuction for female breast reduction, tummy, hips, inner and outer thighs. All of those areas are really well treated with liposuction. In future videos, I’m going to be talking about the different types of liposuction that can be used.
