Breast Reduction surgery popular with American teens

Breast reduction surgeryThere has been a reported rise in the number of teenage girls in the US seeking and receiving breast reduction to reduce the size of their breasts.

This increase may be attributable to the fact that America’’s young are bigger than they used to be and this includes their bust sizes.

General guidelines both here and in the US are that breast surgery should not be performed on girls under the age of 18 years old, however this is a recommendation rather than a rule and in the US operations have been performed on girls as young as 16.

Defence of the increase in number of operations and in the decrease in the patients’ ages comes by way of the problems that can occur as a result of breasts being too heavy for the body’’s frame. Heaviness can cause back, neck and shoulder pains – all problems that can worsen over time and become difficult or even impossible to treat.

In addition to physical problems an over-sized bust can be a source of embarrassment or even shame for young girls. Most surgeons do wait for girls requesting surgery to wait until they are 18 in order that they can be sure that their breasts have fully developed.

If they are being operated on at a younger age it has usually already been established that their breasts have stopped growing, usually by making sure their cup size has not changed in the previous 12 months.
