    What are Tribal Earlobes and how are they repaired

    Tribal earlobe repair surgery explained, plus information on cost, repairing technique, recovery, scarring and before and after photos, by plastic surgeon Adrian Richards of Aurora clinics (http://www.aurora-clinics.co.uk) in Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire, Oxfordshire, and London. Dilated earlobes can be corrected relatively quick and easy under local anaesthetic and is pain free during the recovery period. Plastic surgeon Adrian Richards has invented his own repairing technique which he calls the star shaped incision, which leaves a neat, straight scar in the earlobe after surgery, which will gradually fade away giving a normal appearance to the earlobe and specialises in ear correction surgery.

    Hello, my name is Adrian Richards. I’m a plastic surgeon and I’m the Surgical Director of Aurora Clinics, which is based down here in the south of the United Kingdom. Today in this short video I’m going to be talking about the repair of tribal earlobes, and I’m going to be talking a little bit about how I developed my technique and how it’s performed, the recovery period, and the final results.

     

    So the first thing, what is a tribal ear piercing? It’s basically a condition in which individuals stretch their earlobes over a period of time, normally with spacers. So the earlobe hole can get bigger and bigger. We’ve repaired really very, very large holes.

     

    Now why do people want their ears repaired? It’s normally because what seemed like a good idea in the teens and early twenties actually people are finding it discriminates against them in the job market. There are all sorts of people who’ve come in. We’ve had a punk singer who decided to become a teacher and found it difficult to get a job. We’ve had a golf professional who couldn’t get on the PGA Tour because of his split earlobes. So it’s normally men, and the problem is that when you take your spacer out, you will get some shrinking of the hole, but it won’t go back fully.

     

    So what happened is I had a patient who came in with a dilated earlobe, asked for a repair for his tribal earlobe, and I developed my specialised technique because actually each of the earlobes is slightly different, so it needs a slightly different technique, but it’s a modification of the basic tribal ear correction technique.

     

    What it involves in a local anaesthetic instilled into the ear. So it’s uncomfortable for about 10 seconds, then you shouldn’t feel any pain at all, should be completely numb, and then I remove the excess tissue. Now there are videos of me doing this. So if you’d like to know exactly how I do it, please have a look at the videos, but again every ear is slightly different, so a different approach needs to be performed for every ear.

     

    So the excess skins are removed and then stitched up with internal stitches, which stay around for about two to three months, and external stitches, which we’ll normally remove after a week. In the week, we like you to keep your head up a little bit, reduce swelling, a couple of extra pillows at night, and your ear will be covered with brown tape. We like you to come back and remove the stitches a week after they’ve been inserted. Then you’ll have a slightly red mark on your ear, which will fade.

     

    Now our aim really is to get your ear back to normal, to get the earlobe back to normal so no one can see whether you’ve actually had a tribal ear piercing. If you want to get your ear pierced again, you can but just avoid the scars, so either have the ear pierced in front or behind of the old scar and it shouldn’t be a problem at all. But don’t wear too heavy earrings.

     

    So overall, tribal ear piercing is a really great technique for reversing those dilated ears that you can get from the big spacers. We specialize in it. I think I’ve performed more of these procedures in the UK than any other surgeon.

     

    So if you are interested, the cost for the procedure is 800 pounds for one ear and 1,500 pounds for both ears, and that includes all follow-up, all appointments, and everything. So it’s a whole package price.
