Inverted nipples are caused by tight milk ducts. They tether the nipple inwards and despite the muscle of the nipple trying to pull the nipple out, the tight milk ducts pull it inwards.
The milk ducts are very strong and some techniques for inverted nipple correction have aimed to lengthen and stretch these.
In our experience, these lengthening techniques are only really good for grade 1 and possibly mild grade 2 of nipple inversion cases.
In most grade 2 cases and grade 3 cases the most reliable option, however, is a division of the milk ducts. This does create a good permanent inversion of the nipple but the downside is that you will not be able to breastfeed following surgery.
In summary, if you are considering surgery to correct your inverted nipples it can be very simply performed under a local anaesthetic. However, if you feel you would like to breastfeed at a later date it is generally unlikely you’ll be able to do so if you have a grade 3 inversion there but it is usually possible if you have grade 1 inversion.
You need to think long and hard about whether you would like to breastfeed if you are considering inverted nipple surgery.
