Did you know that inverted nipples occur in around 10% of the UK population, both male and female?
Quite a surprising stat, but it’s true. Which means that for most of us, if we don’t have nipple inversion ourselves, the chances are that we know someone who does.
The condition is caused by the inward pull of shorter-than-average milk ducts. Though it’s relatively common, it occurs with varying degrees of severity.
Many people with inverted nipples won’t be affected to the point where surgery is required to treat them. The mildest cases can usually be corrected easily at home by applying the Niplette suction device, which works overnight as you sleep. It’s only the more severe cases that need to be treated surgically.
So if you have inverted nipples and want to treat them, how do you know whether you have a mild case, or are likely to require surgical correction?
The different grades of nipple inversion
Inverted nipples are categorised by a grading system running from 1, the mildest, through to 3, the most severe.
Grade 1 nipples are either flat or slightly inverted. They are capable of everting, but will invert again after a short time. Grade 2 nipples are more deeply inverted, and though they may evert spontaneously or with suction they will invert again immediately. Grade 3 nipples rarely, if ever, evert.
