Inverted Nipple Correction Surgery Techniques
At Aurora we treat over 200 cases of inverted nipple correction per year with a very low recurrence rate and feel that our technique offers the best option both in minimising any scarring and giving good, long term correction of inverted nipples
The Aurora technique for inverted nipple correction surgery
At Aurora we find that our technique, which involves minimal scarring at the base of the nipple gives the best result as the incision is likely to be barely visible, unlike in the techniques detailed below which involve large incisions around the edge or the areola or directly across the nipple. Likewise we find that, by inserting soluble stitches at the base of the nipple, we can secure the nipple without using artificial materials or skin flaps.
Other types of inverted nipple correction surgery
There are a number of different techniques that can be used to correct inverted nipples. These include:
- incisions which are normally semi-circular in shape around the junction of your areola and breast skin. The milk ducts are located from this incision and either divided or freed internally. In Aurora Clinics we do not perform this incision as we find it possible to free the milk ducts via a small incision hidden at the base of the nipple within the areola and that this avoids a scar around the outside of your areola (the dark area around your nipple) which can be visible.
- Some surgeons prefer a technique in which the nipple is split in order to access the milk ducts. We at Aurora Clinics feel that a vertical split dividing the nipple is unnecessary to access the ducts and can lead to unsightly scarring of the nipple itself and therefore do not use this technique.
- Other surgeons favour using amounts of your own nipple tissue to form a trampoline effect under the nipple to hold it in an outward position. These pieces of tissue are lifted up and folded over themselves so that they lie under your nipple. At Aurora we find this technique can cause unsightly scarring in the areola and do not use it for this reason.
- Likewise we do not use a technique which inserts any substance – either from your body or an artificial material – under your nipple to provide eversion.
