(Augmentation)
Breast enlargement surgery is the surgical enlargement of the chest and can be performed on both men and women.
Did you know...?
Breast enlargement surgery is the surgical enlargement of the chest and can be performed on both men and women. The vast majority of breast enlargement surgeries are performed on women, but occasionally a patient undergoing gender reassignment surgery from male to female does have breast enlargement surgery.
The history of breast enlargement procedures
Breast enlargement procedures have been performed for hundreds of years with different techniques, most of which did not produce longstanding results and were fraught with problems following the treatment. The modern age of breast enlargement surgery started in the 1960s with the first generation of breast implants. These were thin-walled silicone implants which contained a liquid silicone gel.
How has breast enlargement improved?
Since then the breast implant technology has advanced considerably and now the implant walls are much more sturdy and tend to contain a cohesive silicone gel which has a gummy consistency, rather like a Turkish delight. The advantages of this consistency are that the silicone is much less runny and less likely to permeate throughout the body should the lining be compromised.
Who has breast enlargement surgery?
Breast enlargement surgery is the most commonly performed cosmetic procedure in the UK at the moment, with approximately 30,000 women in the UK undergoing the procedure each year. Most people undergoing breast enlargement surgery fall into one of two categories:
Firstly:
People who did not develop a significant bust, or who developed a very asymmetrical bust, with one breast significantly larger than the other.
Secondly:
Women who, after pregnancy, breastfeeding or weight loss have lost volume in their bust. This may be associated with downward movement of the nipple and, if the nipple does lie below the crease of the breast a procedure may be appropriate.
What do I need to think about when considering breast enlargement surgery?
There are many different things to take into consideration when thinking about breast enlargement surgery. These include whether a teardropped or round shaped breast implant would be most suitable for your shape and also whether the implant would be best placed behind or in front of your pectoralis major muscle. These are illustrated in some of our informational videos. There are also a number of incisional techniques which essentially involve incision around the nipple, in the armpit, through the tummy button or in the fold under the breast. In the UK, as many people have a fair complexion and tend to scar very well, the favoured approach by most surgeons is in the fold underneath the breast.
What do the studies say?
Studies have shown that breast enlargement surgery is one of the surgical procedures with the highest patient satisfaction of any surgeries. Breast enlargement surgery has been shown to improve the quality of life more than surgeries such as hip replacements, varicose vein operations or any other significant surgical procedure.
Is breast enlargement surgery right for me?
Overall, breast enlargement surgery is extremely popular for people who would like to enhance the appearance of their bust. It is important to bear in mind that many of the celebrities who undergo breast enlargement surgeries have extremely large implants, often up to 700 – 800 cc per side.
Breast enlargement surgery at Aurora Clinics
The average breast enlargement implants used by Aurora surgeons is between 250 and 300 cc per side, which produce an extremely natural appearance. At Aurora Clinics the aim of a breast enlargement surgery is to produce a very natural figure without excessive volume of the bust which can lead to irreversible changes in the breast tissue itself, often requiring an uplift procedure at a later date. Breast enlargement surgery should be considered semi permanent and your implants may need to be changed approx 15 years following operation, though many manufacturers do offer a lifetime guarantee for their implants.
