Cheek Implants
Cheek implants are used to increase the volume of the cheeks. The other treatment that can be used to increase the fullness of the cheeks are dermal fillers.
WHAT ARE CHEEK IMPLANTS?
- Cheek implant surgery is a procedure which enhances the contours of the face.
- This process is also known as malar augmentation.
- Patients may choose to undergo this procedure to enhance cheekbones and give the face a more balanced appearance.
- The surgery can also be used to reconstruct the face after an accident.
WHAT IS INVOLVED?
- Prior to your surgery, you will have a consultation with your plastic surgeon.
- The surgeon will explain the surgery, go over your implant and surgery options, and educate you on what to expect during the recovery process.
- You will also be shown before and after pictures of patients who have had the same surgery.
- You will be fitted with an implant which fits your facial contours and profile.
- The day of your surgery, you will be given medication for comfort.
- Intravenous sedation, general, or local anaesthesia will be administered.
- Incisions will be made either inside your mouth or on your lower eyelid.
- Once the incisions are made, the implant will be inserted and positioned.
- The implants are then secured by attaching them to the bone with screws and sutures or appending them to soft tissue.
- The incisions are then closed with sutures.
- Your Surgeon may use sutures which dissolve or ones that will need to be removed post surgery.
- The process takes 30-45 minutes, and is an outpatient procedure.
RECOVERY
- Following cheek implant surgery, you will feel tenderness and swelling which may last for up to 6 months.
- Once you are home it is critical to keep incisions and suture lines moisture free.
- Your surgeon will give you proper care instructions for your sutures.
- Pain is common following cheek implant surgery, and your Surgeon may prescribe pain relievers to take as needed.
- Your Surgeon will schedule a post surgery follow-up generally within the first week after your surgery.
RESULTS
- While there may be swelling for up to 6 months, following cheek implant surgery you will see a dramatic difference immediately.
- The highness of your cheekbones will be noticeable, as will round and protruding cheeks.
- Many patients have reported a full and youthful appearance in the cheeks.
