Chin Reduction Surgery

The chin is the foundation of a person's face and a very large or very pointy chin can cause the appearance of unbalanced features.

WHAT IS CHIN REDUCTION SURGERY?

• Chin reduction surgery or mentoplasty (as opposed to chin augmentation or enhancement genioplasty) is a relatively simple surgical procedure performed by a plastic surgeon to reduce and/or reshape the size of the chin bone, creating a more balanced face.

WHAT IS INVOLVED?

• Potential patients meet with the surgeon to determine what the changes will be to the chin and have any questions answered.
• At this time the surgeon will advise the patients on when or whether they should discontinue various medications.
• Chin reduction surgery itself takes about an hour.An incision is made across the chin or inside the mouth by the surgeon who then stabilises it with surgical wire or titanium screw.
• These incisions leave little or no scarring.
• In the case of an unbalanced chin, the surgeon may move part of the chin bone to create more balance.
• Depending on what is planned, the surgeon will shape the bone with surgical grade instruments.

YOUR RECOVERY

• Following chin reduction surgery, patients should plan on spending a minimum of one week at home before returning to work, school or physical activity.
• This should allow for plenty of time for the initial swelling and bruising to dissipate.
• Some patients may experience numbness in the chin and face.
• Any numbness should fade after the first few days.
• A small number of patients experience numbness in the chin area for extended periods.
• Any surgery involves a slight risk of infection.
• Surgeries in other parts of the body, but a course of antibiotics are usually prescribed. – Remove sentence
• During recovery, patients should adhere to a soft food or liquid diet from three to five days after the surgery.

• Chin reduction surgery is a permanent procedure.
• Often, patients will report vastly improved jaw functionality as a result of chin reduction.
• As with many elective surgeries, patients can see increased confidence as a result of their newly reduced chin.
