Tummy Tuck Surgery – How the Belly Button Changes Following Tummy Tuck Surgery
Hello. My name is Adrian Richards, and today I’m going to be talking a little about how the belly button changes with pregnancy, how it can be treated, how it’s likely to look after tummy tuck surgery. So with weight loss or pregnancy, the tummy button tends to change in size and appearance slightly. In particular, as the tissue of the tummy loosens slightly, the umbilicus or belly button tends to become slightly more hooded on the superior portion. The upper part of the belly button becomes more hooded with a slight overhang there.
So, what can be done about this? Well, in the tummy tuck, the belly button or umbilicus is normally re-sited. So your surgeon will cut around the belly button, leave it on a stalk and then the skin itself of the tummy comes downwards, and then the belly button is brought out through a new opening.
There’s a lot of debate in plastic surgical circles about the best type of belly button, whether it should be round, vertical, oval shaped vertically, oval shaped horizontally, or some surgeons use flat techniques which make a round with a V at the top. So, in my practice, I tend to favour a vertical oval belly button. It’s sort of gently curved, not quite round, but oval, an innie, normally there will be an innie belly button. And the other thing I do and a lot of other surgeons do is thin out the surrounding tissue around the belly button, sort of an area of that sort of width, and then that is then secured down to the tummy wall. So that gives you a nice, gentle curve downwards towards the belly button.
So, after a tummy tuck procedure, your tummy should look obviously natural. Your belly button should lie in the middle without the overhang because it’s the same belly button but through a different hole. There should be a gentle sort of curve downwards to your belly button and a scar around the belly button. I think the best scar is an oval, a vertical oval around the belly button which will fade with time and shouldn’t really be that noticeable a year or so following surgery. Most people will be happy to show their belly button in a bikini or clothing that shows the bare midriff following surgery. So again, it’s important to talk to your surgeon about how your belly button is going to look following surgery.
I hope this has been helpful.
