What Is Microdermabrasion
Hi. My name is Fleur Nichols. I’m a Medical Aesthetician here at Aurora. I’m going to be talking to you today about microdermabrasion.
Microdermabrasion is a form of mechanical exfoliation. It is using fine crystals through a little handheld tube, which creates a very gentle, almost sandblasting actually of the skin, taking off the top layer of dead skin cells, showing the healthy, new cells underneath. It works much deeper than your exfoliating scrubs, etc. and is much more stimulating than some of the mild peels. A combination of exfoliation and stimulating the blood supply creates a really instant rejuvenation. After one session you do notice an improvement with the skin. It’s fresh and bright and it feels really soft and lovely. Obviously, a combined session of treatments will actually create more of a result for certain skin problems.
It’s fantastic for congested and sluggish skin, but actually can be used for everyone, excluding perhaps very fine skin with a lot of broken red veins. Other than that, it’s suitable for all skin types, all people, all ages. It’s a fantastic treatment to use as an accelerator for other treatments because it prepares the skin beautifully. We often use it in combination with our skin peels, and we have had some fantastic results that way.
You expect to feel through the treatment more of a sucking action and a very, very slight scratchy feel. Certainly nothing uncomfortable. Actually, some people find it quite relaxing. Your skin can be pink, a healthy glow, a bit like you’ve run round the block, that kind of look to the skin. It’s very minimal how long this lasts. It can be a matter of 10, 15, 20 minutes, and that will start to go down. If you have a little bit more of a sensitive skin, you may find that will carry on for a couple of hours. You will notice a result after one treatment, but after several treatments you will start to see more of a result on things like blackheads, blocked pores, etc.
For aftercare, we suggest, as we always recommend, sunscreen. Whenever you are taking off those top layers of the skin, which is what we want to achieve with any form of skin treatment to reveal those new cells, we always recommend a sunscreen to apply afterwards. The treatment can be done approximately every couple of weeks, sometimes every week. We will assess your skin type and what we really want to achieve. Then we can also recommend it as a monthly maintenance. This isn’t essential and can be used as and when you feel you need to have this treatment.
The microdermabrasion is a very affordable treatment, and as I said before, can actually just be done as a one-off and you will notice an improvement with your skin. It’s much more effective than a standard facial or any of your home exfoliations. This is what makes our microdermabrasion a very popular treatment in our clinic.
