Botox – What Areas Can It Be Used In
Hello. My name is Adrian Richards. I’m the Surgical Director of Aurora Clinics, and my background is as a plastic surgeon.
The question I’m going to ask in this video, which is part of a series of videos looking at Botox treatment, is what areas can be treated. With Botox, essentially we can use it for treating hyperhidrosis, which is excessive sweating, which I’ve discussed in previous videos. Today I’m going to be talking about which muscle groups can be treated. Botox essentially weakens overactive muscles. It reduces the nerve impulse to overactive muscles, weakening the muscles. These are the active lines. So any line that’s caused by muscle activity, muscle contraction can be treated with Botox.
The classical three areas that are treated are the frown, in between the eyebrows, which is also known as the glabella. The glabella area, frown lines, can be treated. The cross lines across the forehead can be treated and the crow’s feet area can be treated. And they are the three main areas that are treated. Other areas can be treated and these include, working down the face, the lines on the nose. These are called bunny lines. Bunnies are supposed to have them, which are little lines here caused by underlying contraction of the nasalis muscle.
Other areas that can be treated working down the face, these lines here, the nasolabial lines are said to be able to be treated. It’s a very advanced treatment because obviously there’s a lot of muscle which involve smiling and lip movement around the lower part of the face. Generally, lower face Botox below the eyes is a slightly more advanced technique and more fraught with complications because of the complex muscles in the mid-face area. Nasal area can be treated, the muscle which turns the corner of the mouth down, giving you the down-in-the-mouth look can be treated. Just to turn the corners of the mouth up. The other area which is often treated are the neck bands, which I think I’ve got one. The band in the neck there which you see in slightly older people which is the edge of the muscle in the neck. They can be released.
Just to recap, areas that can be treated are frown, cross lines here, crow’s feet area here. I’m going to talk in another video a little bit about what you can expect from treatment from these areas. The basis of the Botox treatment is anywhere where there is excessive muscle activity we would aim to reduce so we get a balanced look. What we don’t want is a frozen, inanimate look. We want a nice, balanced relaxed look that looks natural.
I hope that’s been helpful and informative.
