Earlobe Repair Following Long-term Dilation
Hello. My name is Adrian Richards. I’m the Surgical Director of Aurora Clinics based here in the United Kingdom. In this video, I’m going to show you an operation I performed earlier today on a gentleman who’s dilated both earlobes to really quite a large amount. He’s now slightly embarrassed about this appearance and comes forward today for repair of this under local anaesthetic.
So this is just before the operation. You can see we’ve got quite a big hole in the earlobe on the right side.
This is just after the local anaesthetic has been instilled, so the area’s completely numb. I’m just going to start by incising along the front of the rent here, close to the cheek so that the eventual cut, the scar, is going to lie in the junction of the cheek and the ear where it will be well hidden.
Next I move to the back here. Again, just going straight through the substance of the ear to remove that rent, just completing the removal at the top there, and then that tissue will be discarded.
The next stage is to sew the area back with some deep stitches. These are deep stitches within the substance of the ear. You can see I’m just testing where I want the area to go so that everything will be as neat as possible. This is a bearing stitch, which will last approximately three months really within the ear which will slowly dissolve over that time. You can see that slowly pulls the ear in there, pulls the earlobe together.
So that’s with the deep stitches completed. I’ll just complete that now with some skin stitches, which again have very little tension on them just to allow the skin to heal in the best possible way.
So here we can see before the operation and then immediately after the operation with the area repaired.
