Inverted Nipple Surgery FAQs

Question:Your Questions Answered by the Surgeons at Aurora Clinics

I would like to arrange surgery for the correction of an inverted nipple which has never been fully everted, so I guess it would be graded as a Class 3. Could you tell me how long it will take to recover from this type of surgery? I need to know how much time I will need to take off work.

I am also an avid runner and was wondering when it would be safe for me to return to my favourite hobby?

Is it possible for the consultation and procedure to be carried out on the same day? I would like to keep travel costs to a minimum. Finally, do you perform surgery on Saturdays? I should point out that I am of male gender.

Answer:

Thank you very much for your enquiry. Firstly, inverted nipples do occur in men although less frequently than in women. However, they are corrected in a similar fashion.

In answer to your particular question, the recovery time is relatively quick as surgery is performed using local anaesthetic. Plus you will only need to wear a relatively small dressing.

You should be able to return to work the day after surgery, although it is important to wear slightly looser clothing during this time, so as you do not add pressure to the area. This also prevents the outline of the dressing showing through your clothing.

Yes, it would be possible to have the consultation and treatment on the same day. However, it would be useful to ask if you could email a picture of the inverted nipple for assessment prior to your appointment.

Surgery is performed at Whitethorn Fields which is our specialist clinic located just south of Stoke Mandeville in Buckinghamshire. It would be a good idea to have someone with you on your appointment day although this is not absolutely necessary.

We do occasionally perform surgery on Saturdays but normally it is performed on Tuesdays or Fridays during the week. Many patients find that Friday is an ideal day to have the operation as it requires just one day away from work. Friday also leads into the weekend which gives you further time to recover following your operation.

In your email you mention that you are a keen runner. We generally advise that patients reduce their running time for two weeks following surgery in order to give the area time to heal.

When you do return to your favourite hobby, you might want to use some light padding or a lubricating cream to reduce any friction when you run.
