Question regarding products to help treat scars

Question:Your Questions Answered by the Surgeons at Aurora Clinics

Dear Aurora Clinics, I have a medium-sized raised scar below my nose from when I fell face-first on the concrete 1-2 years ago. It is very annoying but doesn’t really hurt. How do I treat this?

I want it as small and unnoticeable as possible. The only thing I am treating it with at present is some cocoa butter. I am massaging the cocoa butter in for about a minute, around 4 times a day.

If you have any recommendations for products to treat scars, that would be great. Could I almost completely remove the scar if I used the right products?

Answer:

Thank you very much for your enquiry. Generally, scars do continue to mature gradually with time and every year you will notice it being slightly less raised and red. Eventually scars tend to fade into flat silvery lines which become less noticeable with time.

It is possible to improve the scar with regular massage. I generally advise that Bio-Oil is the best substance to use for this. Bio-Oil is specifically designed for scars and I certainly think it would be worth trying massaging this into the scar twice a day.

If the scar, however, does remain unsightly, it is sometimes possible to perform further surgery to the scar to tidy it up and improve its appearance.

Not all scars are suitable for surgery: we would be happy to give you an opinion as to whether your particular scar would be suitable for further surgery if you email us a photograph to mailto:info@aurora-clinics.co.uk.

Alternatively, you could come and see us in clinic for a Consultation where we can discuss the best way forward for you. To arrange this, please call us on 01324 578290.

Many thanks for your email and all the best with whatever course of action you decide upon for your scar.

Best Wishes,

The Aurora Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery Team
