Will massage help to heal my hypertrophic scars?

Question:

I have hypertrophic scars on my chest which have recently been injected with steroids.

I am pleased to say that most of them have flattened and look much better but a week ago, I noticed that another scar has formed on my neck. It feels very much like a blister and appears to have air inside it which should be popped. I stop myself from doing this for fear that it will encourage it to grow even larger.

It feels rather odd having a bubble on my chest. In a bid to heal the area, I have been treating it with hydrocortisone which has had little effect. The scar is still brownish in colour and I am very keen to get rid of it.

You stated on YouTube that a scar which is already formed should be massaged. Would Vitamin E oil help me to see some improvement?

Answer:

Thank you very much for your enquiry regarding hypertrophic scars. Generally, the best treatment is steroid injections which you have had.

We would generally advise you not to pop the scar as it has only been a week following your injection and the area should be allowed to settle with time. If this does not happen, please feel free to contact us and we will arrange a consultation to assess the area.
