This is a surgery video of implant removal and replacement, with a breast capsulectomy. We begin the video with Mr Richards explaining exactly what a capsule is. A capsule constricts an implant, causing it to lose shape and feel very firm. It can also be quite painful, and the shape of the breast looks strange as it distorts through the contracting on the capsule.
The inflatable sizer is used to test what size will best fit the patient. She has requested 420cc, so the inflatable sizer will be inflated to that size, and then Mr Richards and his team will assess whether it is a good fit for the patient.
We skip to the end appearance of the surgery, with our patient having softer and fuller breasts, with a much better shape.
The implants are compared, they are both still in tact, but one is totally encapsulated. The capsule differs in thickness around the implant, but as Mr Richards cuts through it to retrieve the implant we see the folds in it that the capsule has formed. The capsule also clings and sticks to the implant, kind of like velcro, which means it requires some force to physically remove it from the implant. Once the capsule is removed, the implant returns to its original shape.
