Surgery Abroad – Worth the Risk?

Save a few pounds and have a holiday. It sounds tempting doesn’t it? So what’s the problem?

Put simply: surgery abroad is like playing the lottery with your health. How can you be sure of your surgeon’s experience and capability?

In the UK, all our surgeons have to be registered with the General Medical Council and are usually members of other societies such as BAAPS, BAPRAS & ISAPS. However, in some centres outside the UK, these accreditation may not exist and the patients may have no idea about their surgeon and his/her level of experience and capability.

Then there is the question of the cleanliness of the hospital and sterilisation of instruments, and the safety of blood used in transfusions. In the UK these are all strictly governed by the Care Quality Commission.

In addition, there is the vital question of aftercare. Even if the procedure goes as planned, you will need time and expert care to recuperate. Should something go wrong you will need instant access to specialist care. This is a considerable problem if your surgeon is thousands of miles away. Do you still think it’s worth it or are you worth more?
