Adrian: Today I’m going to be talking to a patient who, 6 weeks ago, had a right-sided inverted nipple correction. So I’ll just hand over straight to you. Can I ask you what are the problems you had from the nipple?
Sarah: I’ve had the inverted nipple since I was a teenager obviously and it’s always bothered me for the last 30 years, especially when I was in my late teens, early 20s/30s. It affected a lot of relationships that I have had with men and when I’ve been to GPs in the past they’ve said that isn’t really a big problem.
With the internet these days obviously it’s a lot easier for women to gain access to information and I think that it’s a fantastic procedure for people to have done and I won’t hesitate to recommend anyone to have it done.
Adrian: So it’s just the right side with you, isn’t it?
Sarah: It was just the one side but it does not matter if there is one or two I think that it looked unusual. I would recommend whether one or both to have it done.
Adrian: Did it alter the clothes you wore, that sort of thing?
Sarah: Oh absolutely, I mean going on a holiday I remembered having to cancel holidays with a whole bunch of just girls going away because they are going to go topless and you have to hide it. It’s the same going into changing rooms.
Friends would tell you to try tops on and I wasn’t able to do that. You are forever hiding behind your good nipple and just bend on the right side so you can always hide it.
Adrian: And you felt that GPs weren’t giving information about how it could be corrected?
Sarah: No I felt that it was seen as a cosmetic procedure and it wasn’t really life-saving and more of a procedural experience really.
Adrian: And how did you find out that it could be done?
Sarah: I Googled, that’s where I started. It wasn’t from personal recommendation. I guess that’s because I’m such a very quiet and shy person that I never really discussed it among such close friends so I Googled and came across your clinic here.
Adrian: Did you see our videos?
Sarah: I watched the videos, where it was explained very clearly and simply.
Adrian: And was the procedure painful?
Sarah: For me the procedure was under local anaesthetic and that hurt a little bit for me. The actual procedure, once the local went in, was okay, you don’t feel a single thing so it’s completely painless and it was very, very quick, it was over so quickly.
Adrian: And then after the procedure, you do bruise don’t you?
Sarah: I bruise easily so I was bruised and I did have slight bleeding as well.
Adrian: So the end of the nipple sometimes is a bit scabby for about a week and then it separates and now its 6 weeks down the line can you explain how your nipple looks now?
Sarah: Awesome! Just really, really pleased with it. It looks fantastic and I’m just really thrilled.
Adrian: That’s good. Just a follow-up question. Does it vary with temperature and things or is it just always out now?
Sarah: It’s always out and the areola sometimes balances both sides when it’s cold because it’s more wrinkly.
Adrian: Brilliant, well thank you very much for talking today. Last question – any advice to anyone thinking of having it done?
Sarah: Go ahead and do it now! Don’t hesitate.
