Quick Facts About Inverted Nipple Correction Surgery:
- Inverted nipple correction is usually a local anaesthetic procedure.
- Takes approximately 30 minutes to do.
- That’s just 15 minutes per nipple!
The Inverted Nipple Correction surgery process
Once you’ve had your initial consultation and established that you definitely want Inverted Nipple Correction, you’ll book your date in the clinic and then approximately a week before the clinic, the Aurora Clinics team phone you and tell you what time to come in to try and minimise the length of time you need to hang about waiting on the day.
Medications to Avoid Before Your Inverted Nipple Correction
- Any non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like Nurofen, Aspirin, and Voltarol as they can cause thinning of the blood and increase the risk of bruising.
- Homeopathics like ginkgo, St. John’s wart, and vitamin E. Again, these can increase your risk of bruising.
The Day Of Your Operation
We like you to try and take it a bit easy during the days immediately prior to your Inverted Nipple Correction operation. Make sure you’ve had enough sleep and haven’t been out too much.
Get someone to drive you for your surgery: it’s important that you don’t drive home yourself after this operation because you’ve had an anaesthetic (albeit a local anaesthetic) and if you did have a problem, insurance-wise your claim wouldn’t be valid if you’d just had an operation.
Before you’re taken into the operating theatre, if you haven’t had photographs taken of your nipples, we will do this (in order to be able to record and show you your results before and after). We will then explain exactly what’s about to happen to you.
Some local anaesthetic is put in under your nipple. This can be a bit uncomfortable for about a minute each side but after that, you really shouldn’t feel any pain. You might feel some movement, however, as the operation is performed.
Correcting Your Inverted Nipples
Aurora Clinics’ expert surgeons correct inverted nipples using a very small incision on the outside of the nipple. The ducts are divided and the nipple is held in an everted position by internal stitches.
The dressing is then put on, usually under a bra and consisting of a foam dressing which surrounds the nipple with flesh coloured Micropore tape over the top. We like these dressings to stay on until we see you again for follow-up: your bra can go on over the top.
Following the operation, you need to be driven home. You should aim to keep mobile but refrain from any sort of activities which might cause more swelling or bleeding (such as housework, hooray!) Try to take it easy and keep the dressing intact. Don’t get it wet: shower around it or just strip wash during that time.
Catching Up With You
Before you leave, we’ll give you an appointment for 3-4 days after your surgery. At this appointment, we change the dressings and make sure everything’s okay. Sometimes there’s a tiny little stitch to remove, but it is absorbable, and in most instances, we will leave it just to fall out on its own and the internal stitches you shouldn’t see.
At that stage, four days later, we may reapply a very light dressing. It is reasonable to expect the nipples to stay quite swollen during this stage and slightly more prominent.
In the weeks following surgery, the swelling goes down and they get slightly less prominent. They could be slightly bruised at the early appointment but this will slowly decrease. We often give you Arnica gel or a kind of gel called Oraderm to reduce the bruising.
Will I Still Have Sensation In My Nipples?
The sensation in your nipples should be maintained as normal after your operation. Normally we find that the nipples have returned pretty much to their normal appearance by about two months.
