Question:Your Questions Answered by the Surgeons at Aurora Clinics

I have had areola reduction surgery twice. My first treatment took place in 2007 and the second in 2008. I opted for secondary surgery because the size of my areolas did not turn out as agreed and there was a difference in their shape!

I became unexpectedly pregnant eight months after my last surgery which resulted in both areolas returning to their original size. This left me with thick scars and pigmentation around both regions.

I am extremely unhappy and embarrassed with the way that my areolas look now. Is it safe for this procedure to be carried out again and does this normally happen? I have always been under the impression that size reduction was permanent. Please help.

Thank you very much for your enquiry. Unfortunately, there is a tendency for areolas to stretch after breasts reduce in size as tension can cause them to widen. A way around this is to use a permanent internal stitch which passes all the way around the areolas. This acts as a physical barrier against them stretching.

We think this would have been the ideal procedure in your case but it does not sound as though this procedure was used. When the bust increases in size during pregnancy there is even more stretch on the areolas, thus increasing the possibility of them widening in size.

Even with a permanent purse string, it is important not to gain too much weight as this will also increase the size of the bust. It is probably better to wait until you have finished your family before proceeding with further areola reduction as further pregnancies may affect the size of your areolas.

Overall, I think that there is a very good chance that we could obtain a permanent reduction in the width of your areolas by using permanent sutures. You might be interested in viewing a video of us performing areola reduction procedure.

Many thanks for your enquiry. We do look forward to meeting you in the future should you wish to schedule a consultation.
